Ed Siemion began teaching Special Education at Whit Davis Elementary about ten years ago. This is his second year at Double Helix. Prior to that, he taught in CCSD, most recently at Cleveland Rd. Elementary. His daughter, Payton, will also attends Double Helix this year.
Mary Jessica Hammes has worked in journalism, in some form or fashion, for 20 years. After graduating with a journalism degree from the University of Georgia, she has pursued a varied career including traditional newspaper reporting, book editing, public relations, writing for a popular parenting website, and teaching journalism to high schoolers. Past work includes Flagpole Magazine; Athens Banner-Herald; Athens Magazine; Georgia Magazine (UGA's alumni magazine); the University of Georgia (where she was senior reporter for the news service division); the Georgia Scholastic Press Association and the Virginia High School League (as instructor and judge for high school journalism publications); ABRAMS Books; Babygooroo.com; the Etiquette & Leadership Institute; and the Athens Institute for Contemporary Art/ATHICA (as guest essayist).
Hammes also works at Canopy Studio in Athens, teaching trapeze to children and adults and performing multiple times a year with the studio's professional repertory company. She lives in Athens with her husband, son, and assorted animals.
